Venice Film Festival 2013 trailers
The 70th Venice Film Festival kicked off Wednesday with a screening of 3-D space odyssey “Gravity.” Oscar-winning director Bernardo Bertolucci is this year’s jury president. Awards to be handed out include the Golden Lion for best film, Silver Lion for best director and a new Grand Jury Prize. Here are a few of the films that will be presented at the festival, which concludes Sept. 7.
'Gravity'
A drama following an engineer with little space experience who must rely on veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky when satellite debris cuts them loose in space. With Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. Directed by Alfonso Cuarón.
'Tracks'
Based on the true story of Robyn Davidson, the story chronicles her solo trek from Alice Springs to Uluru and on to the Indian Ocean in the unforgiving Australian desert, accompanied by her loyal dog and four unpredictable camels. With Mia Wasikowska and Adam Driver. Directed by John Curran.
'The Wind Rises'
An animated historical fantasy film looking at the life of Jiro Horikoshi, the man who designed Japanese fighter planes during World War II. With Hideaki Anno and Mirai Shida. Directed by Hayao Miyazaki.
'Miss Violence'
Eleven-year-old Aggeliki commits suicide by jumping off a balcony; she's found with a smile on her face. Authorities investigate what led Aggeliki to death, while her family insists the fatal fall was an accident. With Christos Loulis and Rafika Chawishe. Directed by Alexander Avranas.
'Moebius'
A man from a broken family questions his sexual desires, going so far as to have sex with his mother. The risque film received the "restricted" rating from the Korea Media Rating Board, meaning it can premiere only at special theaters. With Cho Jae-Hyun and Seo Young-Joo. Directed by Kim Ki-Duk.
'The Canyons'
In this erotic thriller, a young movie producer finds out his actress girlfriend is having an affair. He goes insane, and his mind games turn into bloody acts of violence. With Lindsay Lohan and James Deen. Directed by Paul Schrader.
'Philomena'
Pregnant as a teenager, Philomena was sent to a convent as a “fallen woman.” When her baby was a toddler, he was taken away by the nuns for adoption in America. She spends the next 50 years searching for her adult son. With Judi Dench and Steve Coogan. Directed by Stephen Frears.
'Parkland'
A recounting of the chaotic events that occurred at Dallas' Parkland Hospital on the day President Kennedy was assassinated. With Zac Efron and Tom Welling. Directed by Peter Landesman.
'Ana Arabia'
Filmed in a one sequence-shot, the movie follows a young journalist who visits a small community of Jews and Arabs in a forgotten enclave between Jaffa and Bay Yam in Israel. She discovers characters far from the usual stereotypes. With Yuval Scharf and Yussuf Abu-Warda. Directed by Amos Gitai.
